Divine Sovereignty of Providence It may come as a surprise to some evangelicals but God’s sovereignty or providence has always been viewed as one of the attributes of God by the Christian Church. It follows naturally from and is based upon God’s omnipotence. Indeed, as we shall see, it was viewed as an essential attribute of God by the early Church and anyone who dared to deny it was called an atheist. Divine providence was thus not viewed as something that God could jettison and still remain GOD.
